Playwright: Alana Ruben Free

Alana most recently performed her play, Beginner at Life , at The Times Square Arts Center, NYC.

Real Romance , Learning to Abort, Niddah, Virgin Mom and Still Waiting, Kabbalah or Movies, and other monologues by Alana have been seen at a variety of NYC downtown venues and in Toronto , Canada .

Her poetry and prose have been published in Bowery Women, Neshama, Messenger and on Ducts.org . She is the founding and current co-editor of The Mom Egg, the literary journal of Mamapalooza, as well as the executive producer of the documentary, The Last Stand .

Her art blends and reflects her environmental influences: the down-to-earth quality of Atlantic Canada, the intellectualism of the yeshiva world of Jerusalem, and the urban edginess of New York .

She was a Rhodes Scholar finalist at the University of Western Ontario where she graduated from the Ivy School of Business before completing her graduate degree in Jewish Studies.

A native of Fredericton, NB, Canada , she resides with her eleven-year old son in NYC. Beginner at Life is the first part of a trilogy exploring the passage from physical, emotional, and spiritual alienation­ to wholeness, specifically through the prisms of overcoming anorexia, post-partum depression, and religious fundamentalism.
